Description

Some recent scientific studies have suggested that the Orangutang may be the most intelligent animal on earth after humans. More so than Chimpanzees.

Yet these wonderful animals, the Orangutan - "man of the forest" - find themselves endangered in the wilds of Borneo and Sumatra.

Like this young Orangutan in the photo, will we soon only see these creatures in our zoos?

Photo taken in Usti Zoo of the city of Usti nad Labem - Northern Bohemia in the Czech Republic.

Makes me sad to see animals in captivity.

The eyes looks said as well...

Some bright/overexposed areas from strong sun should be avoided maybe.

The understanding of intelligence in animals still has a long way to go in the sciences. There is much that is still not understood, so to make claims one way or the other is probably misguided. Dolphin intelligence is even harder to measure because they are such a different species from us and live in a very different environment. Have a read of this article for example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetacean_intelligence

For Orangutans see:

What we can say is that animals continue to surprise us and that higher intelligence is not just limited to mammals. African Grey Parrots and other species of birds for example have been found to have cognitive abilities similar in scope to Chimpanzees.

Its interesting stuff...

A good image although the high contrast lighting is difficult to shoot with and hence the overexposed areas.

Max width is 716 pixels on this site.

Send me a message when it's fixed and I'll come back and comment.

Purplerose, all my photos have had this issue. My hosting site only allows a choice of 400 or 800 pixels. 400 seems rather too small so I have always opted for 800. If you want to see the little bit extra on the right of the image you could try downloading it.

But, point taken, I might have to look at another hosting solution.

Great pose and motion blur. The over-exposure is harsh in places.

As for the image size: you can create a 716 pixel image and increase the canvas size to 800, placing the image to the left. Or you can add a link to full version.
